What is a helical pile?

A foundation you can screw into the ground — and load the same day

A helical pile is a steel shaft with helix plates that is rotated into the soil like a giant screw, creating a deep foundation without excavation, concrete, or cure time. It carries full load immediately, handles tough clay and wet soils, resists frost heave, and is ready to build on over 90% faster than poured concrete.

They've become a fast favorite among homeowners, contractors, and engineers across the country as a stronger, cleaner alternative to poured footings or driven piles. See why they could be the perfect support for your project.

Working contractors who answer the phone

Helical Foundation Repair is owned and operated by Sean Kelly and Nick Bender. Years in the field showed them that typical foundation methods were slow, labor-intensive, and tough to use in challenging soils.

When they discovered helical piles, they saw the answer to building faster, stronger, better structures — and built a company to bring that technology to projects across the country, while staying the responsive, honest contractor they always wished they could hire.

Helical pile FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What are helical pile foundations?

Helical pile foundations are a deep foundation system built from a steel shaft fitted with one or more helix plates. The plates let the pile be screwed smoothly into the ground with little soil disturbance, creating a foundation that installs fast, can be loaded immediately, and carries heavy loads even in saturated or loose soils. They also resist frost heave — effective in nearly any climate, from shoreline to clay.

How do helical piles work?

A helical pile transfers the structure's load down the shaft into the helix plates. Once installed to the right depth, soil pressure on the plates locks the pile against movement up or down. That means no excavation, rapid installation, immediate load capacity, and the ability to verify capacity by measuring installation torque.

Can helical piles be used in all soils?

Almost — from loose sand to dense clay. The main exceptions are sites where bedrock is very close to the surface or the ground is heavily cobbled. Their adaptability to varied soils is a major advantage on projects anywhere in the country.

How long do helical pile foundations last?

A properly designed and installed helical pile typically lasts 50 to well over 100 years in average soil. Where corrosion is a concern, protective coatings or cathodic protection extend the design life even further.

How much do helical piles cost?

The upfront price can look higher than concrete, but helical piles are often more economical overall — they install far faster, need much less site prep, and last for decades. Measured across the full life of the project, total cost is frequently lower. For a real number on your project, get a free quote.

Can you build a deck on helical piles instead of concrete?

Yes. Helical piles make an excellent frost-proof footing for decks, patios, and sunrooms. They install in a single visit with no concrete pour or cure time and carry load immediately, so deck construction can start the same day.
